Specialist & PhD in respiratory medicine

Get your breath back.

Assessment and treatment of breathlessness, allergy and cough. In calm surroundings.

The practice

A calm, thorough setting for your lungs and your breathing.

Walsted Lungeklinik continues Backers Klinik, which has moved from Strandvejen in Hellerup to Jægersborg Allé in Charlottenlund. The clinic has a particular focus on asthma, exercise-related breathlessness and cough, and also covers the breadth of general respiratory medicine, including the investigation of unexplained breathlessness. The approach is evidence-based and unhurried: we reach the diagnosis objectively and lay out a plan that fits your everyday life.

Pulmonary services

Core strengths and the full breadth of pulmonary medicine.

A particular focus on asthma, exercise-related breathlessness (not least EILO) and cough in athletes, alongside assessment and treatment of the other common respiratory conditions in adults.

Chronic cough

Systematic work-up of a cough lasting more than eight weeks. We uncover the most common causes and target the treatment at the underlying cause.

Exercise-related breathlessness (particularly EILO)

Breathlessness during hard training is often mistaken for asthma. With a sport-specific work-up we tell the causes apart: EILO, exercise-induced asthma and dysfunctional breathing. One of the clinic's areas of special expertise.

For athletes & sport

We also assess and treat the other common respiratory conditions — including breathlessness (dyspnoea), airway allergy and respiratory infections — and perform lung-function testing/spirometry. Allergen immunotherapy (immunotherapy) for both airway and insect allergy is given by the clinic's doctor and experienced nurses.

Flow-volume loop: the core of lung-function testing (spirometry).

For athletes & active people

Breathlessness in sport has many causes, and they are easily confused.

common causes of breathlessness in athletes that are routinely confused, and each calls for a different approach.

Breathlessness during hard training or competition is often labelled “asthma” when something else is going on. A targeted, sport-specific work-up tells the causes apart, so you get the right diagnosis, not just inhalers that don’t work.

Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO)

A transient narrowing in the larynx during hard exertion, and it is often mistaken for asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma (EIB)

Transient airway narrowing triggered by exertion, and it is common in endurance, winter and swimming sports. Diagnosed objectively and treated to fit your training load.

Dysfunctional breathing

An unhelpful breathing pattern can itself cause breathlessness and reduced performance, and it is the one most often missed.

About the doctor

Emil Ingerslev Walsted

I am a specialist and PhD in respiratory medicine. In daily practice I cover the full breadth of the specialty, and here at the clinic I have a particular clinical focus on exercise-related breathlessness, from the everyday asthma patient to the elite athlete.

I assess and treat the common respiratory conditions in adults, with particular strength in the laryngeal causes of breathlessness and cough, including EILO. Alongside the clinic I am a staff specialist (afdelingslæge) in the Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at Bispebjerg Hospital and an active researcher with more than 40 scientific publications (published as Walsted ES, recent work as Walsted E).

How to get an appointment

From referral to consultation in three steps.

  1. Referral from your GP

Pulmonary medicine requires a referral from your GP before a subsidised visit. Your GP sends the referral electronically to the clinic.

  2. Book your appointment online

Once your GP has sent the referral, you book a time yourself in the patient portal. Log in with MitID. We collect the referral, so you do not need to wait to hear from us.

  3. Prepare for your visit

Bring your health card, a list of your medication and (for athletes) a short description of your sport and symptoms.

Not sure whether a pulmonary work-up is right for you? You are welcome to call during phone hours, and we will help you on your way.
