Walsted Lungeklinik is a specialist respiratory practice in Charlottenlund, continuing Backers Klinik. We assess and treat adults and adolescents with a particular focus on asthma, exercise-related breathlessness and cough, evidence-based and with time for each patient. Patients under 18 are seen by prior agreement with the clinic.
The doctor
Emil Ingerslev Walsted
I am a specialist and PhD in respiratory medicine. The PhD is from the University of Copenhagen, 2017, with a thesis on diagnostic approaches in exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO). In daily practice I cover the full breadth of the specialty, and here at the clinic I have a particular clinical focus on exercise-related breathlessness, from the everyday asthma patient to the elite athlete.
At the clinic I assess and treat the common respiratory conditions in adults: asthma, airway allergy, unexplained breathlessness and cough (including chronic cough). A particular strength is the laryngeal causes of breathlessness and cough, including exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), which is often mistaken for asthma and requires targeted assessment to find the right diagnosis and treatment.
In addition to my work at the clinic, I am a staff specialist (afdelingslæge) in the Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at Bispebjerg Hospital. I am also an active researcher with more than 40 scientific publications (published as Walsted ES, recent work as Walsted E) and have been affiliated with Royal Brompton Hospital in London. I have served on the joint European Respiratory Society and European Laryngological Society task force on inducible laryngeal obstruction and on the EAACI task force on allergy and respiratory disorders in sport, and was second author on both documents. I continue to collaborate with research and treatment centres in Denmark and abroad. I bring the latest knowledge directly into the assessment and treatment of each patient.
My primary research field is exercise-related breathlessness and EILO, and I have performed more than 400 continuous laryngoscopy during exercise (CLE) tests: the examination in which the larynx is observed directly while the patient exerts themselves.

The clinic
Walsted Lungeklinik continues Backers Klinik, which has moved from Strandvejen in Hellerup to Jægersborg Allé in Charlottenlund. The clinic holds an agreement with the Capital Region of Denmark. With a referral from your GP, assessment and treatment are subsidised.
The clinic is bilingual: your consultation can take place in Danish or English, whichever comes more naturally to you.
The approach is the same whatever the problem: evidence-based assessment with an objective diagnosis before treatment begins, and time and calm in the consultation to understand the whole picture.

A referral from your GP is normally required. Your GP sends it electronically, and it is then held ready for the clinic. We collect the referral ourselves, so you do not have to wait to hear from us.
You can also be seen without a referral as a private or insurance patient at the clinic’s rates.
